It is estimated that there will be approximately 20,000km of power cable installed in northern European waters by 2030, with the expectation of between 10 and 40 large-scale cable repair projects in the North Sea per year. The significant cost of service interruption at an offshore wind farm can rise into the tens of millions per month, so Global Offshore is passionate about supporting operators and owners to provide a cost effective and responsive maintenance solution, locating and rectifying the fault as soon as is possible in both deep and shallow waters.
The significant cost of service interruption, particularly within the offshore wind industry, can rise into the tens of millions per month.
Global Offshore is passionate about supporting wind farm operators and owners to provide a cost effective and responsive maintenance solution.
With the boom of offshore wind, there are an increasing number of critical subsea assets and infrastructure in place. Earlier this year, Global Offshore signed a framework agreement for cable repair with offshore wind farm developer and operator Ørsted through the Atlantic Cable Maintenance Agreement (ACMA). This is an entirely new way of working for the offshore renewables industry, although an approach which has been tried and tested with huge success over several decades within the telecoms sector in particular by Global Marine, also part of the Group. This approach will set the blueprint for the future of combined cable and subsea asset agreements, bringing about benefits for everyone across multiple industries.
Supplementary services related to cable installation and maintenance as well as pre-mobilised vessels and pre-engineered repair scenario planning are also included in the framework. Wrapping support together in this way makes the process much more convenient via a single service provider. In-situ repairs to rectify faults within the confined space of each affected turbine, temporary power for both planned and unplanned power outages, logistics and personnel, plus cable pull-in teams, termination and testing can be delivered to support the main cable works delivering a turnkey solution for installation as well as ongoing O&M.
Typically an OEM HV cable manufacturers joint can take up to seven days or more to install at sea and have an order lead time of over 12 weeks. As part of our Complete Cable Care service, Global Offshore stock universal HV power cable joints. These universal joints are readily available to rapidly mobilise should you not have stock of on OEM specific joint, or the jointers required to install it. The universal HV power joints are specifically designed to minimise at sea jointing time, typically reducing joint time by around 50% to around 3.5 days, thus reducing the power transmission downtime and further minimising the required weather window in the event of a fault.
The joints are designed to be compatible with the majority of HV AC export cables currently deployed regardless of the cable manufacturer, conductor material or cross section area and are also able to joint two dissimilar cables. As part of the Global Marine Group, Complete Cable Care has access to some of the best cable jointers in the marine sector, able to respond quickly and efficiently to cable repair needs.
Global Offshore has the ability to store and manage power cable for owners and operators requiring a strategically placed location to home their cable assets on both the South Coast in Portland or in the North East in Blyth.
Our facilities are manned by qualified personnel and experienced cable engineers who handle the precious cable with care and are on hand to monitor on-going cable conditions and the wider environment, ensuring assets are well maintained for future use.
Our Portland facility also completes cable testing as customers require, offering assurance to owners ahead of retrieving the cable from storage for use on installation and maintenance operations.
