Standardising the Tieback System for Subsea Fluid Transfer | UmbiliPipe Consortium Project

February 2020

As oilfield sites become more technically and economically challenging the existing bespoke solutions that have been used, do not stack up in these more difficult environments.

To make these sites more commercially viable, the answer may well be to develop a standardised approach to some of the engineering processes and infrastructure.

Working Together

Global Offshore and its partners Flexlife, Axis Energy Projects, Infinity Oilfield Engineering, Umbilicals International and Proserv have joined together as the UmbiliPipe Consortium Project, to combine their expertise, experience and resources, to deliver a universal reusable, low cost tieback system called UmbiliPipe.

This will integrate the current system that involves multiple parts such as manifolds, flexibles, valves, installation and operation, into a single system approach that will limit interfaces, reducing risk and delivering increased project efficiencies.

Why Innovate

Emerging and marginal fields have many challenges; they can be smaller, with a limited volume of oil and in areas which are deeper, more hostile, or more difficult to access. This can lead to a bespoke product being too slow and expensive to develop, and it is this that has led to the development of the Umbilipipe single system approach.

It’s designed to increase the viability of small pool wells, by providing a cost effective means of tying back to an existing asset with a single standardised product. In addition, it will also offer savings in time and effort during the design and purchasing stages, as well as reduce fuel costs and CO2, as smaller more efficient vessels can be utilised.

Another benefit of the consortium approach is the reduction in the design and procurement stages, with the added benefit of it being delivered in a faster, leaner, more efficient engineering cycle, followed by rapid deployment. The product is also designed with re-use at the forefront of its purpose, this allowing further savings and lowering of embodied energy in the installation.

Partnership in Action

The project demonstrates true collaboration with all partners that combines their respective expertise can deliver a positive outcome. Global Offshore will ensure the new product solution is developed to enable installation, protection and recovery.

The product’s design is dependent upon the fluids it is transporting, with this expert analysis being undertaken and added into the process by Infinity.

Flexlife then take that information and provide a concept design for the product, taking into consideration Global Offshore’s installation and recovery activities. Axis designing the structures that the UmbiliPipe is going to utilise, with Proserv providing the instrumentation for the manifolds.

So far the project’s initial concept phase has been delivered, with the consortium now looking to engage with operators who are looking to further develop the project through to the FEED stage.
